Lausanne Part II

Château Saint-Maire

Notice that the upper and lower section of the château are made of different materials. The lower section, like the Cathedral, is built with Molasse, a stone composed of sand aggregates. The upper section is made of red brick, reminiscent of those in northern Italy.

The château was constructed at the beginning of the 15th century.  It was originally the Bishop's Palace.  Today it serves as the office of the Conseil d'Etat (State Council).

This is a statute of Major Davel, a Vaudois hero.  He was executed after attempting to liberate the region of Vaud from the Bernese.
